Cinque Terre, or at least Manarola, features on nearly every internet list of 'places you must see in your lifetime' (even Argos have it on their in store tv loops!)...and since visiting myself, I have to say I absolutely agree it is a MUST. It is every bit as beautiful as it is in the pictures. The five coastal towns (Manarola, Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia and Riomaggiore) are within one of Italy's national parks and are well connected by train, boat and a hiking path. The place is a hotspot for travellers of all ages and hence has quite a welcoming and friendly atmosphere, however for us it was just a total welcome break after two weeks of non-stop-city-after-city - it was lovely to go somewhere calmer. We spent the first day on the beach at Monterosso, which wasn't anything amazing, but then on our way home we discovered the pebble beach at Vernazza which was indescribably beautiful. Turquoise clearwater sea, rocks to climb on and a waterfall through a 'cave'. Plus, as it was hidden, it was relatively quiet in comparison. I am definitely going to go back one day and do the full hiking route!!!
